To understand the biggest problems in Physics you need the largest ever Physics experiment, The LHC. Due to switch on some time in 2008 the LHC aims to carry out cutting edge experiments on the sub-atomic level.

The Smashing Particles! project is all about letting pupils gain a greater understanding of physics.

We are a group of Year 10, 11 and 12 students from Netherhall School and Sixth Form College in Cambridge and Yardleys Science College in Birmingham who have come together to learn more about the LHC in its launch year. We have received a Public Engagement Grant from the Institute of Physics and a Royal Society Partnership Grant.

As a group we will be carrying out experiments then presenting our results to other students taking part in the High Energy Physics project. We will be collaborating with real scientists from The Universities of Cambridge and Birmingham and we will be using equipment not normally available to school pupils on our visits to the university departments. We will present our new-found knowledge to the public with a stand with hands-on activities, at the Cambridge Science Festival on Sunday 18 March (2 to 5pm).

Listen to interview with Ally Davies (Netherhall teacher and project organizer) on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
